The Bucket Bag That Built an Empire

In 2002, Jean-Pierre Klifa traveled to Florence to evaluate a small handbag company. He reviewed their designs—competent pieces that would sell adequately and be forgotten quickly. Nothing wrong with them. Nothing memorable either.

"I didn't like the designs," Jean-Pierre recalls. "So I very quickly realized I needed to design myself."

What emerged was deceptively simple: a soft hobo silhouette with a drawstring closure, balanced proportions that look right whether you're five-foot-two or six feet tall, and gold-plated hardware engineered not to tarnish or oxidize. Inside, a practical interior with an organizer pocket—because Jean-Pierre understood that women need to find their keys without excavating their entire bag.

Seven Years to Overnight Success

The Bucket Bag didn't become famous immediately. For seven years, Jean-Pierre refined it, placed it in boutiques, and watched women discover it. The turning point came when Nordstrom picked up the design. Suddenly, the bag that had been quietly building a following exploded into the mainstream.

From 2009 to 2011, the JPK Bucket Bag was the #1 selling women's handbag in America [1]. Over 200,000 units sold. Not through aggressive marketing or celebrity placement—through word of mouth. One woman would carry it, her friend would ask where she got it, and another convert was made.

"Nothing has changed since I designed it," Jean-Pierre notes. When something works that perfectly, you don't reinvent it. You simply let new women discover what others already know.

Two Versions, One Philosophy

Today, the Bucket Bag comes in two versions, each with its own personality.

The Nylon Bucket Bag is your everyday companion—lightweight, packable, practically weightless on your shoulder. It comes in a kaleidoscope of JPK's signature colors, from coastal blues to sunset oranges. Toss it in your beach bag, take it on the boat, let it handle the demands of island life.

The Leather Bucket Bag is the elevated version for dinners at Harbour Town, gallery openings, or any moment when you want to feel polished. The same perfect proportions, now in supple leather with that distinctive gold hardware.

Where Margot Begins

At Jean-Pierre Klifa Hilton Head, our Style & Image Consultant Margot often starts a styling session with the bag. She'll ask how you live: Do you need hands free for grandchildren? Are you constantly on the go between beach and brunch? Looking for one piece that transitions from the marina to champagne at Quarterdeck?

From your answer, she builds outward—matching dresses, suggesting a jacket, tying in a scarf that echoes the bag's color story. By the time you leave, you don't just have a handbag. You have a complete Hilton Head look.

Come see the bag that built an empire—and let Margot build your Hilton Head wardrobe around it. Visit Jean-Pierre Klifa at Coligny Plaza.
