Discover the Paris-to-Hilton Head story of designer Jean-Pierre Klifa—a fourth-generation fashion legacy, the iconic Bucket Bag, and resort elegance at Coligny Plaza. Ask for Margot.

Some designers inherit their craft. Jean-Pierre Klifa was born into it.
Growing up in 1960s Paris, young Jean-Pierre didn't play in ordinary places. His playground was his mother Rolande Klifa's atelier—a sun-filled studio where bolts of fabric leaned against the walls and women arrived to have their wardrobes transformed. But what made those afternoons extraordinary wasn't the fabric or the fittings. It was the visitors.

Yves Saint Laurent. Pierre Balmain. André Courrèges [2]. These weren't legends to a boy in that atelier—they were family friends, frequent guests who gathered around his mother's worktable to discuss silhouettes, debate hemlines, and argue passionately about the direction of fashion. Jean-Pierre absorbed it all: the way they studied a woman's posture before sketching a single line, their obsession with how fabric moves, their refusal to compromise on quality.
"I came into fashion through the back door," Jean-Pierre has said. He didn't follow the traditional path of design school and apprenticeships. Instead, he earned an MBA in the United States and built businesses. But the lessons from that Parisian atelier never left him—the understanding that great design isn't about following trends. It's about understanding women.
The Moment Everything Changed
In 2002, a business opportunity brought Jean-Pierre to Florence, Italy, to evaluate a small handbag company. He reviewed the designs and felt nothing. They were competent. Forgettable. The kind of bags that fill department stores without making anyone's heart beat faster.

So he did what any fourth-generation designer would do: he designed his own.
The Bucket Bag was born not from a trend report or a marketing strategy, but from Jean-Pierre's own standards. A soft hobo silhouette with perfect proportions. Gold-plated hardware that wouldn't tarnish. A practical interior with organization for the way women actually live. It was elegant without being precious, functional without being boring.
Seven years later, that bag became the #1 selling women's handbag in America [1]. Over 200,000 women chose it. Not because of advertising or celebrity endorsements, but because it was simply, unmistakably right.
From Paris to Palm Beach—and Now to Hilton Head
The success of the Bucket Bag gave Jean-Pierre something every designer dreams of: the freedom to build a complete vision. In 2015, he launched a resort wear collection that embodied everything he'd learned in his mother's atelier. Bold, confident prints digitally rendered for sharpness that won't fade. UPF 50+ fabrics that protect while looking beautiful. Silhouettes designed for comfort and elegance—pieces that work from morning yoga to evening cocktails without a costume change.

Today, Jean-Pierre Klifa boutiques can be found in the most discerning resort destinations: Key West, Naples, Charleston, Vero Beach, and now Hilton Head Island. Each store carries the same philosophy Jean-Pierre learned watching Yves Saint Laurent study a woman's posture: fashion should make you feel like the best version of yourself.
"Women don't come to me for plain clothing," Jean-Pierre says. "They come when they want color, prints, something festive to the eyes. I want each woman to feel the extreme comfort and elegance that a JPK garment has to offer."
